The Impression and Fitting Process
Getting fitted for custom hearing protection takes three short steps. First, a consultation confirms which product fits your specific use case, whether that's a job site, a shooting range, or a stage. Second, we take an ear impression of each ear, using a soft material that sets in the ear canal in just a few minutes with limited to no discomfort. Third, that impression is sent to a manufacturer, and your custom molds typically return within one to two weeks for a final fitting appointment, where we confirm seal and comfort before you take them home.
Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf Protection
Foam and generic earplugs are inexpensive and disposable, but their loose, one-size fit lets sound leak in around the edges, and comfort drops fast during extended wear. A custom earplug is molded directly from your ear canal, which means a consistent seal, a stated noise reduction rating (NRR) you can rely on, and a product built to be cleaned and reused for years rather than thrown away after one use.
Understanding Noise Levels and Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)
Hearing damage risk begins around 85 decibels (dB), the level OSHA uses as its workplace action threshold, and climbs sharply from there. A few reference points: a normal conversation sits around 60 dB, a lawn mower or power tool runs 90 to 100 dB, a concert or sporting event runs 100 to 120 dB, and a gunshot can peak above 140 dB, loud enough to cause permanent damage from a single exposure. OSHA sets its full-shift workplace limit at 90 dB over 8 hours, with allowed exposure time cut in half for every 5 dB increase above that.
This damage is cumulative and permanent. It doesn't reverse with rest, and it doesn't announce itself until real damage has already occurred, which is exactly why prevention matters more than treatment here.
Who Should Consider Custom Hearing Protection?
- Industrial and construction workers need protection that still allows situational awareness and speech understanding, since blocking every sound on a job site creates its own safety risk.
- Hunters and recreational shooters face a different problem: gunfire produces a single, sudden burst loud enough to damage hearing in one exposure, which calls for protection that reacts instantly to that spike.
- Musicians and concertgoers need protection that lowers volume without distorting the sound itself, since standard earplugs muffle music into an unrecognizable blur.
- Swimmers, including anyone with PE tubes or a perforated eardrum, need a product that keeps water out rather than noise.
- Motorsports enthusiasts and frequent commuters on loud transit face steady, high-decibel exposure that adds up over time.
Care and Maintenance of Custom Molds
Clean custom molds regularly with mild soap and water and let them air dry completely before storing them in their case. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners, which can dry out and crack the material over time.
Most custom molds last one to three years with regular care, though ears themselves change shape gradually over time, especially in growing children, which means a remold may be needed sooner. Bring your molds to any regular appointment so we can check the fit and seal.
